Refrigerator Buying Guide - Tips You Need To Know When Buying A New Refrigerator

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Buying a new refrigerator can be a daunting experience. Reading through all the refrigerator reviews, refrigerator ratings and consumer recommendations can be mind boggling. After all, there are so many different models to choose from in addition to all the different brands, styles, even colors. So where do you start?Well, the easiest place to begin is by asking yourself the following questions:1) How Much Space Do You Need?: The space inside a refrigerator is expressed in Cubic Feet. Considering most people don’t understand what a cubic foot represents, think of it this way. You need about Ten Cubic Feet of interior storage capacity per 2 people. This 10 cubic feet is for freezer space as well as refrigerator space. So, figure about 7 cubic feet of refrigerator space and 3 cubic feet of freezer space per 2 people.Granted, even though that’s the rule of thumb, you have to consider your specific space needs such as:How big is your family? - If you have a family of four, figure you’ll need at least a 20.0 cubic foot fridge. Are you a Vegetarian? - If you are a vegetarian, you won’t need as much freezer space or internal meat drawers. You’ll want as much refrigerator space as you can handle to be sure you have the space for your fresh fruits and vegetables. How will your family grow, or shrink? - Are your kids in college and about to flee the nest? Do you have a baby on the way or elderly parents moving in? All of these factors are things to consider when making a refrigerator purchase. Consider that most refrigerators last about 10 years, so factor in how your family will be growing or shrinking over that time period so that you don’t have to keep buying new refrigerators. 2) What Kind of Refrigerator Will Fit into Your Kitchen?: It sounds silly, but there have been a number of people that have purchased a new refrigerator only to get it home and find out that the new fridge doesn’t fit into their existing kitchen. So, take measurements before you go refrigerator shopping.Factor in not only where the fridge will be sitting, but also how far out the door will swing. After all, you don’t want to get your new fridge home and then find out you can’t open it!Keep in mind that counter depth refrigerators are very popular, but they often lack the storage capacity that most people need. So, consider this when you’re shopping. Counter depth by the way means that the front face of the refrigerator will sit flush with the existing counter top, rather than sticking out. It looks much nicer, but it’s not always the right choice for everybody.3) Color Choices: There’s good and bad news with refrigerator colors — the good news is there aren’t too many to choose from — and you guessed it, that’s also the bad news.Refrigerators typically come in white, black, stainless steel, bisque (or beige) and a stainless steel alternative called, satina. Satina is usually cheaper than stainless and easier to maintain, but it doesn’t always (depending on the brand) look as nice. The days of avocado green and lemon yellow are gone for the moment. So, what do you do if you need a different color? Well, many refrigerators have attachable panels that affix to the face of the refrigerator that allows you to make it any color your desire. Most people like to blend their refrigerator into their existing cabinetry by getting panels that match the wood work. GE Monogram, Kenmore Elite and Kitchenaid offer this option and all have performed well in a number of online refrigerator reviews.4) Type of Refrigerator: The type of refrigerators available are:Side by Side - Where the freezer and refrigerator are next to each otherTop Freezer - Where the freezer is mounted on the top of the refrigeratorBottom Freezer — There the freezer is mounted on the bottom of the refrigeratorFrench Door Refrigerator — Which is also referred to as a bottom freezer because it has two split (side by side) doors on the front with a pull out drawer freezer on the bottom.Built In Refrigerator — Can be any of the above styles, but the refrigerator is built into the existing cabinetry and hidden away with the stylized color panels mentioned above.Compact Refrigerator — Also called a “dorm refrigerator”, the compact refrigerator is perfect for game rooms, spare rooms, garages or family areas.5) Best Refrigerator Brands: We’re always reviewing different models of refrigerators by a wide variety of manufacturers. In all of the refrigerator reviews that we’ve done, only a handful of manufacturers rise to the tops as leaders — so these are the brands to consider and brands to avoid:General Electric: GE, GE profile and GE Monogram are all excellent choices and rate very well with consumers. The GE Aurora brand (sold exclusively at The Home Depot) was above average, but did NOT rate as well as the GE or GE Profile brands.Consider:Amana: Amana has consistently been rated by Consumer Reports as one of the best performing refrigerator brands. Our testing proves the same as well. Amana is one to consider.Kenmore: Sears has had its ups and downs with its many inside brands, but Kenmore consistently has led the pack with high quality, durable and affordable refrigerators. The Kenmore Elite was especially outstanding.Whirlpool: Whirlpool has been making high quality products for decades. They are now the parent brand of Amana, Maytag and JennAir. Whirlpool is top notch.LG: Although they lack a bit in customer service, the LG French Door Refrigerators are some of the most affordable and attractive units on the market.Brands to Avoid:Maytag: Maytag used to be a mark of quality, but for the past ten years or so their quality of refrigerators has been deteriorating rapidly. Hopefully the execs at Whirlpool can bring the luster back to this once great brand name.SubZero: Although we personally love their refrigerators, they tend to have a lot of problems over the course of their lifetime. If you have the budget, you may want to consider a Viking or a Gaggenau refrigerator instead.Fisher & Paykel: Seemingly always at the bottom of the Consumer Reports quality lists, Fisher & Paykel has been slightly improving year after year. But, they still have a ways to go. We hope this helps you as you journey out into the world of refrigerator shopping. Brook Trout Fishing Tips

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The traditional brook trout anglers are very set in their ways and techniques. I understand that the tried and true methods work and use them myself, but the best bet to catch those lunker brook trout I am using live baits. The following four tips using live baits like, grasshoppers, salamanders, insects, leeches, minnows, green frogs and others do work best for me. These techniques and the live baits do create better chances of you catching that big bragging rights brook trout.Tip 1 - Drift fishing is the most natural way to present live baits in lakes and streams for catching lunker brook trout. Position yourself downstream from a riffle or pool and gentley lob the bait upstream. As it sinks keep your eyes on the line and your rod tip while holding the tip high, while feeling for the first sign of the bottom. Take up the slack with your free hand and then you can feel for changes that might signal a trout’s strike. Concentrate on drifting the edges of boulders, trees, logjams and deep runs.Tip 2 - Float fishing brook trout works in both rivers and lakes, and is especially good when using easily torn off baits such as aquatic insects or salamanders. A small selection of balsa slip-floats, or bobbers. A long rod greatly improves your float fishing experience. Use a neoprene bobber stop a piece of rubber band also does the job set ti at the depth you desire to fish and space the splitshot so the bait drifts naturally as possible. In lakes, a 1/32 or 1/16 ounce jig heads can be used under the splitshot. It’s especially good when using leeches or minnows. When you occasionally pull gently on the line, your bait will jiggle under the float and it will be more appealing to the big brook trout.Tip 3 - Free-lining is another great technique for brook trout, especially on creeks and streams in the late summer. It is most easily done using a fly rod, light monofilament, fine hooks (No, 6 to 10), and use terrestrial insects, like grasshoppers. Hook a grasshopper under the collar and then let your line free-spool as the as the bait drifts downstream. When a brook trout strikes, squeeze the line tightly against the rod and set your hook.Tip 4 - Plunking is good for larger baits fished offshore in large lakes and or at river mouths. The bait is cast out and then allowed to sink to the bottom. The line runs through an egg or bell sinker, so that when the brookie picks up the bait, it feels no resistance. Adding a marshmallow or a small cork steelhead floater helps keep the bait up off the bottom and in the brook trout’s view. Plunking is a great technique for fishing minnows, amphibians, insects and worms. The only downside is that the trout eats and are then deeply hooked. This is not a good technique to use if you are fishing catch and release, because of the possible damage to the brook trout.Robert D Phillips has been fishing Canada coast to coast for over 20 years, visit his site Reel Fishing for information on all species from arctic char to walleyes and more.

If You’re Getting Into Golf You Must Have A Good Pair Of Golf Shoes

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Golf is one of the fastest growing leisure activities in the world. People all over the world are experiencing the joys of this challenging and rewarding sport. Golf has become wildly popular because you don’t have to be a superstar athlete to enjoy it, and it’s a fantastic way to relieve stress. There are countless other reasons why golf has exploded in popularity, but there isn’t enough space here to list them all.If you’re just getting into golf, it’s a good idea to invest in a nice pair of golf shoes. You might think that since you’re just starting out you don’t need to bother with shoes specifically designed for golf, but all the experts will disagree with you. If you’re determined to make a go of it without purchasing golf shoes, at least make sure that you are wearing shoes with a suitable degree of traction. You don’t want to be slipping and sliding around the course. Also, be aware that many golf courses require players to wear golf shoes. Be sure to check the rules at your favorite course before strolling across the fairways in a pair of tennis shoes. One of the characteristic features of golf shoes are the spikes. Golf shoes have spikes for one obvious reason, traction. Golf doesn’t require the same kind of traction you need in football, baseball, or soccer, but it does have its own specific traction requirements. First of all, you won’t always being playing on a flat surface. You’ll often find yourself on all sorts of slopes and angles. Picture the difficulty of pitching the ball from sloped rough in a slippery pair of shoes. Your feet will be moving around and you’ll end up shanking the ball straight at your partners. That’s why golf shoes have spikes on them. Also, you won’t always be playing on perfectly dry grass. If you have any experience with wet grass you know it can be extremely slippery. Again, this is where the spikes become necessary. It’s of the utmost important that you maintain proper form during your swing, and it’s almost impossible to do that if your feet are sliding around. When considering the type of shoe and spikes you’ll need, keep in mind the course, or courses, you usually play on. If you normally play on dry, flat courses, then you won’t need quite as much traction as you would if you regularly play uneven courses in moist environments. Regardless of where you play, you’ll want spikes because they’re key in keeping your feet properly placed whether you’re driving the ball or putting.Golf shoes used to come in a basic old-fashioned sort of style. Many players still prefer these kinds of golf shoes, but they are by no means your only option. Today’s professional golfers often prefer more contemporary looks and golf shoemakers have followed their lead. Modern golf shoes are made from a variety of cutting edge materials designed for maximum performance, comfort, and durability. Many of today’s shoes are not only breathable, but water-resistant, too.As with any sport, having the proper equipment is of the utmost importance if you want to be successful. After the clubs and the balls, the next most important thing on your golf shopping list should be a good pair of golf shoes.Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach, Florida. Watch Clasps Explained

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Watch Buckles and Clasps Watch buckles and clasps come in many different styles and configurations. It would be impossible to list and display all of them, so we have attempted to describe in some detail the main types as well as provide some definition to the terms. The terms clasp and buckle are mostly interchangeable. Buckle usually refers to the strap type band while a clasp is usually associated with a metal bracelet. However, we will use the terms interchangeably here.It is the part of the watch that either opens or separates allowing the watch to fit around the hand. Typically, the buckle is then latched together in some form. Deployment Clasp A deployment clasp is the type where the clasp opens out and folds. It locks in place with a small hook type latch. In this example we are looking at a Seiko 5 Automatic watch. The clasp then folds out in to thirds enabling the watch to fit over the hand. Pushbutton Deployment Clasp A pushbutton deployment clasp is the same as a regular deployment clasp, however in order for it to be released, you must pinch the buttons on either side of the clasp. In this example we are looking at a Ladies Citizen Titanium Corso. The pushbutton is a security feature to prevent the clasp from opening on its own. Fold-over Pushbutton Deployment Clasp Some watches like the Citizen Titanium Skyhawk have two security features. This model has a fold-over snapping latch that secures the whole clasp as well as having the pushbutton feature. The fold-over latch is first flipped out allowing the claps to be deployed by pushing in the buttons on either side. The bracelet is then extended to its full size to fit over the hand. Hidden Deployment Clasp A hidden deployment clasp is the type where the clasp is invisible when it is being worn. The ends of the bracelet come together to meet so that none of the clasp shows. This is done to help the appearance. In this example we are showing a Movado Mens Sport Edition watch. These types of clasps are sometimes referred to as butterfly clasps because they open on both sides characteristic of a butterfly’s wings. The bracelet is then extended to its maximum length. Some hidden deployment clasps have pushbutton release mechanisms on them for added security. Such is the case with this Movado Valor. Jewelry Clasp A jewelry clasp is the simplest of all clasps. It is a latch that snaps closed around a bar.Shown here is a Movado Ladies Harmony. It is released by gently lifting the clasp and unsnapping it from the latch bar. Strap Buckle A strap buckle (Also known as a Tang buckle) is a simple pin system that holds a strap in place by being secured through one of a series of holes in the strap. This is also common on many belts. Show here is a Wenger Avalanche. Specialty Strap Buckle Some straps have special deployment type clasps attached to them. This Movado Strap Eliro has a rubber strap that has a pushbutton deployment clasp attached to it for easy removal. The clasp also allows the strap to be pulled through allowing for a perfect fit around the wrist. The author, Ken Hood, operates a watch and clock superstore called TimeJewels at http://www.timejewels.com

Gaming Headsets

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Headsets or headphones are actually miniature speaker systems. They are stereo hearing systems that are wearable, providing mobility to the user. Traditional headsets were bulky and large with two speakers for both ears encased in padded ovular ear cups. These ear cups were attached to a headband in the shape of an arch that went over the head. Each of these ear cups had a signal wire joined down together as a single wire, which was connected to the audio player/radio through a headphone jack.Today, normal headsets can’t match the excitement generated by computer games. To feel the real action you need a headset that delivers the right acoustics and sound effects to make the game sound real. Modern gaming headsets have stereo sound effects to suit the high-definition audio that most games have. Plus, they are lightweight and comfortable, with flexible and unobtrusive wiring to wear for longer hours. There are also cordless gaming handsets. The basic aspects to be considered while buying a headset are: is it comfortable? Does it stay securely in place for long hours? Is the microphone flexible and unobtrusive? Is the cord long enough for easy movement? Are the volume and other controls easily accessible? Is the sound quality on both the lines clear? The leading manufacturers of gaming headsets are Plantronics, GN Netcom, Headsets.com, Sennheiser, Jabra, and Sony. Gaming headsets are also very inexpensive, depending on the kind of model. A good pair of headphones costs around $10 though a model with all the works may cost up to $150-$200 or more. The Internet is a good source for locating the ideal gaming headset. There are several web sites that provide comprehensive information about the wide range of gaming headsets available in the market today.Headsets provides detailed information about headsets, wireless headsets, phone headsets, aviation headsets and more. Dangerous Plants And You Cat Or Dog

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

You can do many things to keep your cats or dogs from harm, but an inconspicuous danger may still remain in your house - your plants and food.Curious pets might take a taste of any plant. An pet may feel the need to self-medicate (like cats eating grass), and so the plant in a pot might tempt them. Or they may just be curious. Despite being toxic, some plants taste good (for instance, the taste of a berry is no indication of its safety, as some berries can taste fine but be highly dangerous). It is also no guarantee if a plant is edible by people. Many plants can be poisonous for pets, yet completely safe for humans. For instance, onions are very toxic to cats. Also, the quantities that pets need to eat to be affected is much less than we’d have to eat, because of their small size. However, although many houseplants are perfectly safe, many aren’t, and it is necessary to be aware of what ones to avoid.Cats need to avoid completely: chinese evegreen, crotons, peace lillies, onion, lily spider, rubber plant, iris, evergreen, black-eyed susan, belladonna, daffodil (bulb and plant), tobacco (such as ashtray butts), rhododendron, asparagus fern, rhubarb, english ivy and other ivys, tulip plants and bulbs, lily of the valley, easter lily, aloe vera, holly, oriental lily, chrysanthemum, jasmine, java beans, potato, poppy, mushrooms, umbrella plants, honeysuckle, mistletoe, amaryllis bulbs, apple seeds, sweet pea, poinsettia, yews (all types) tiger lily, baby’s breath, marigold, morning glory, philodendron, eggplant, and eucalyptus, which can include a wide selection of plants in your home and larder.Dogs need to keep away from (among other things): croton, apricot, chinese evergreen, daffodil, easter lilly, jasmine, baby’s breath, philodendron, potato, hydrangea, poinsettia, apple, mushrooms, corn plant, honeysuckle, mushrooms, mountain laurel, mother-in-laws tongue, walnuts and many nuts, apple, pear seeds, aloe, holly, umbrella plant, green potatoes (especially the skins), lily of the valley, virginia creeper, peace lily, jade, hyacinth, wisteria, iris, plum, peach, apricot, cherry, pits, schefflera, almond, black-eyed susan, ficus, english ivy, tomato plants (and green tomatoes), and yews. These would include a wide variety of plants in your house and larder.Note that this list is not complete. If you are in doubt about any plants, do research at your library, or on the Internet, consult knowledgeable friends, or if all else fails, get rid of the item.Even if you truly value a favorite plant, your dog or cat must come first. If any plant is creating a health problem, it’s an easy choice what to do, and you can make the correct decision for your pet’s wellbeing.Eric Hartwell oversees “The World’s Best Homepage” intended to be a user-generated resource where YOUR opinion counts. A Review Of The Breitling Navitimer Watch

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Many watch manufacturers market their timepieces as ‘aviators’ watches’ but very few of them would be bought by any aircrew for the purpose of aeronautical calculations. They are ‘designer’ pieces and lack the functionality a real aviator would look for in a watch. However, the Breitling Navitimer is a genuine aviators’ watch.Breitling have had a long historical association with the air industry, both military and civilian. When Breitling was first established its main business concern was making precise counters for both scientific and industrial use. Its specialized knowledge of making precision timepieces made it a watchmaker that would be in demand from the then, fledging aviation industry. The relationship between aviation and Breitling watches was officially established when, in 1936, the British Royal Air Force issued Breitling watches to its aircrews. The Breitling Navitimer is now over 50 years old and is an iconic timepiece. Its design and functionality have changed remarkably little over the years. This chronograph watch can be used to calculate air speed, fuel consumption, rates of descent and the conversion of standard miles into nautical miles amongst other things - all by using the circular slide rule found on the side of the bezel. The legendary Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute is still manufactured today and is almost identical in terms of movement and styling as it was when it was first made in 1963 for the American astronaut Lt Cmdr Scott Carpenter. He wanted a Navitimer but, because one couldn’t tell if it was day or night in space, he wanted a 24 hour version. Incidentally, this was the first Breitling (and perhaps only model) that went into Space. Each Breitling Cosmonaute watch has a self winding, mechanical movement with a power reserve of 42 hours (approx.) There are a total of 38 jewels running at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The chronograph function has 1/5 second, 30 minutes, 12 hours and fly-back. The case diameter is a minimum 41.5mm and is available in steel, two-tone (steel and gold), 18k gold or rose gold. The crystal is cambered sapphire that is anti-reflective on both sides.Other, current Navitimer models include the original Navitimer, Navitimer World, Montbrillant, Montbrillant Olympus, Montbrillant Datora and Chrono-Matic.The World is the largest in the Navitimer collection (case diameter of 46mm), being 10% larger than the original. It consists of 25 jewels and a 2 time-zone, self-winding mechanical movement. The case is available in steel, 18k gold or red gold. The Navitimer Montbrillant collection owes its name from the original location of the Breitling watch factory. It was on this site that the ‘return-to-zero’ movement and the circular slide-rule were first designed and manufactured. To commemorate, these watches are little more ornate; hands and hour markers are embellished in gold. The Chrono-Matic Breitling watch was first developed in 1969 - Breitling created the Caliber II, the World’s for self-winding chronograph movement. The watch was easily distinguishable by the placement of the crown on the left-hand-side of the casing. These watches still place the crown of the left-side. The movement has 38 jewels and each watch has a case diameter of 44mm which is available in either steel or 18k gold. While modern technology has done away with the need for mechanical aviation watches there are those who still appreciate the sophisticated movements of these watches but for those that do, the Navitimer watch from Breitling will definitely appeal.Follow the links for Breitling watches and read wrist watch reviews on other Swiss watches like Oris, Patek Philippe and Panerai watches.
